Leaps of Faith and a New House - 5/7/11

Most things don’t make me nervous. I’m not afraid to speak in public and I’m not easily embarrassed. Five or so years ago, we hosted an engagement dinner with 20 guests. I made a turkey dinner with all of the trimmings and fixings that would be served for a Thanksgiving dinner. It was my first time ever cooking a turkey and making such a big formal dinner. Every adult woman who came to dinner that evening asked me if I was nervous. “Nervous? Why would I be nervous?” I asked.

“Well, you’re making a turkey dinner. What if it doesn’t turn out?”

“What if it’s too dry?”

“So many people are here and you’re cooking by yourself. What if you screw up?”

Wow! Thanks for the confidence. It had never even occurred to me to be nervous. It occurred to me that some things might go wrong, but I wasn’t worried. I trusted that no one wanted me to fail. And if I did fail, our friends would support me in ordering pizzas. Sure, they would all point and laugh to lighten the mood, but no one wished failure upon me or would rejoice in my short comings. That’s not what friends do. Right?

I’ve stopped and started writing this entry a few times…mostly because of fear. We have good news to share, but I’m worried about it not coming to fruition. Having to un-tell good news is humiliating. But I’m taking a leap of faith here and trusting that no one wants us to fail. And if we fail, our friends will only be supportive.

We found the perfect house here in Westlake and we are buying it. Our closing date is set for May 27th. We are so excited. This house is perfect for us in every aspect. It has everything we want in a house and even some things that we didn’t know we wanted until we saw them. It’s in the subdivision we want to be in and our son won’t have to change schools. It has a generous yard and nice driveway that will make for an incredible “beach” this summer. The price was right and the opportunity was simply too good to pass up. But it’s a huge leap of faith because we haven’t sold our house in Illinois yet.

Much of our marriage has been a series of leaps of faith. When I quit my job to stay home with Teo, it was a big leap of faith for both of us. At the time, I was making 60% of our joint income, so our income was cut by more than half. But we worked together to reach our goals. I worked as a waitress at night to help meet our financial needs and I’ve worked on and off in the years since as need be. We’ve made many decisions as leaps of faith; Chris has changed jobs, I’ve worked odd jobs, and we’ve moved a couple of times, all in the name of making a better life for our family.

Through our hard work together, we have managed to maintain excellent credit ratings and not carry any credit card debt. When we moved to Cleveland, we assumed we would need to sell our house in Illinois before we bought a new house. When we found this house in Westlake, it was just too perfect to not at least try to buy it. So we did some research and shopped around for mortgages. We were approved without contingencies from several different brokers and were actually able to take our pick of lender. Of course we went with the lowest interest rate.

However, just because we got approved, that doesn’t mean that money won’t be very tight for us. Carrying two mortgages is a big undertaking and we aren’t rich. I foresee a lot of ramen noodle dinners in our near future and a probable need for me to find a job. It’s more important than ever that we sell our house in Illinois as soon as possible.

There is also still a chance, albeit very small, that our financing will not be approved for this second house. And that does make me nervous. I considered not writing this article because it will feel humiliating if our purchase doesn’t go through. In the end, I decided to write about it anyway because it’s part of the adventure of moving McBeach. The uncertainty, excitement, success and failure are all a part of the journey. I trust that our friends want nothing more than success and happiness for us, as that is what we hope for all of you.

The key to Robertson’s success is not just his skill in the courtroom, but his knack of getting involved in cases that will generate publicity and support for his liberal political agenda.

I wrote a profile of Geoffrey Robertson QC, the barrister who will be acting for Julian Assange as he fights extradition to Sweden,http://pimpinturtle.com/2008/08/02/contrails-or-chemtrails-is-there-a-difference.aspx/, in Saturday’s Independent. Annoyingly, but alas not unusually, the real significance of Robertson’s involvement in the case only struck me after I’d filed.

I think this is relevant to the Assange case. Robertson might not be able to prevent the WikiLeaks founder being deported,Moncler Men Hoodies, yet it makes a lot of sense for Assange to have him involved. Causes that Robertson supports (and Assange feels that he is being persecuted for championing open government) tend to prevail in the end.

There is a pattern to Robertson’s career. He doesn’t necessarily win all the cases he is involved in,Womens North Face Jackets, and yet he tends to prevail. That sounds contradictory, but let me explain what I mean.

In 1995,Kids Moncler Down Jackets, Robertson was involved in the prosecution of the former Malawian dictator Hastings Banda,Moncler Men Long Down Jackets, who was accused of  ordering the murder of opposition politicians. Banda was acquitted. But the case helped to establish the principle that repressive national leaders should not be

I found myself asking wholly legitmately what the design team’s favourite colours were – this isn’t usually the sort of question you’re supposed to wheel out in interviews unless you’re desperate. Rafael is fan of navy (“classic and boring, I know” he added) while his colleague Liselotte Loveborg favours the neutral, pinkish putty shades that are so modish right now.

I also spotted two books on recent fashion exhibitions that have taken Europe by storm – the Maison Martin Margiela retrospective (currently on at Somerset House), a hefty white tome, and the Masters of Black exhibition which is on at the Modemuseum in Antwerp (the clue’s in the title). So we can be fairly sure that monochrome isn’t going anywhere either.

    So there you go.

Rafael also showed me the orangey-red shade of the company’s familiar insignia. It’s number 45526 in their vast archive,Moncler Men Long Down Jackets,http://ezblog.ezdigs.com/2009/05/19/real-estate-expert-picks-seattle-area-as-top-pick-for-recovery.aspx/, if you care to know. Or 1795 if you’re working on the Pantone scale.

The colours team work up to 16 months ahead of the collections that are in store right now, so they’re currently figuring out what shades we’ll be wearing for spring/summer 2011. Obviously pictures were strictly verboten, but I can report a preponderance of sand, stone and khaki. Watch this space.
